I was part of the Social Media Challenge hosted by Kevin Jones coming out of a Social Media workshop at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. I'm off for the rest of the year, and about to leave reliable Internet access. So here is an overview.
I didn't follow along on all, or even most of the exercises, unfortunately. However, I did end up being more involved in social media than I would have been otherwise.
I signed up on the new MSFC blogging site, and posted quite a few notes in the reporting period, most to count as "weekly notes". I did the first few in the first week, and then a raft of others the just before leaving for the year.
In the RSS section, I added some new NASA feeds to my NetNewsWire collection. After, I manually updated some podcast RSS feeds.
I didn't really do anything unusual for Forums, as I regularly used them already.
I started using a NASA inWiki site that I'd set up previously to get Agency discussion going on using FileVault on NASA Macs. It was somewhat less user-hostile than I'd remembered. But not much. You basically have to code directly in HTML, instead of WYSIWYG. I somehow accidently got to the WYSIWYG interface once, when I was trying to copy over HTML from elsewhere...
I updated my LinkedIn profile during week 5, and made some NASA connections.
In Week 6 I signed up for Yammer and made some connections. I tried again to warm to Twitter. Still don't much like it. I prefer Facebook.
Social Bookmarking I'm still pretty primitive with. I don't like the overhead of tagging. Metadata seems like work, and not in a good way. I know it's an area I need to have procedures for.
The whole activity has ben useful and helpful!
